Quick Math

How Much Mulch Do You Need?

One cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at a proper 3-inch depth. Most front-yard bed sets in Stafford and Fredericksburg subdivisions run 2 to 4 yards; larger corner lots with wraparound beds run 5 or more. Measure length times width of each bed, add them up, and divide by 100 for a working estimate.

Prefer something longer-lasting than mulch? We also install river rock and decorative stone at $225 per cubic yard: a higher upfront cost that does not need an annual refresh. Ask about it when you request your quote, or compare both in the instant estimator.

Mulch Installation FAQs

How much does mulch installation cost in Stafford or Fredericksburg?

Installation is $115 per cubic yard with a $350 project minimum, and that price includes delivery, bed cleanup and prep, light edging, and the install itself. A typical 3-yard front bed job runs about $350 to $400. The instant estimator on our home page prices your beds in about a minute.

When is the best time to mulch?

Spring is the classic window, after beds are cleaned up and before summer heat, but fall installs are just as effective and protect roots through winter. We install through both seasons; the more useful deadline is usually an event on your calendar.

Do you clean up the beds first?

Yes. Bed cleanup and prep is part of every install: weeds and debris come out and the bed gets shaped before mulch goes down. Overgrown beds that need redefining are $1.50 per linear foot as an add-on.

Should I add a weed barrier?

For beds with recurring weed pressure it is worth the $0.60 per square foot. For well-kept beds under a full 3-inch depth of mulch, the mulch itself suppresses most weeds. We will tell you honestly which situation your beds are in when we quote.
